Samsung has officially unveiled the Galaxy S24 series. As usual, we already know a lot about Samsung’s new flagship phones thanks to numerous leaks, but now we’re about to see Samsung’s big move in artificial intelligence. The phones boast a host of new “Galaxy AI” features, along with a faster Snapdragon chip, improved displays, and more efficient cooling, among many other upgrades and updates. They’ve also taken some cues from the latest iPhones, which we’ll explain shortly.

These three phones share the same features as their predecessors. There’s the compact Galaxy S24, the slightly larger Galaxy S24+, and the flagship S24 Ultra that adds an S Pen and a quad-camera array. The phones are roughly the same size as last year, but there are significant design changes. Instead of a curved aluminum frame, the S24 and S24+ are flat all around. That’s a good thing – the phone is comfortable to hold and has slimmer bezels. As a result, the S24 and S24+ have an extra tenth of an inch of display. All three phones run the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile platform, at least the version launching in the US.
Samsung pointed out that compared with the previous generation Galaxy S23 series, the performance of Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has also been significantly improved, with a 20% increase in CPU throughput, a 30% increase in GPU (graphics) performance, and a 41% increase in NPU, which can be achieved Considerable improvements in AI performance processing. Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager of mobile handsets at Qualcomm Technologies, said: “We are proud to continue to work with Samsung to lead a new era in the mobile industry and provide consumers with an extraordinary premium experience.” Gen 3 for Galaxy on Galaxy S24 series Advanced AI functions are injected into it to achieve new experiences and empower users’ daily lives through AI functions. “
The Ultra’s bezels still have a slight curve, but the bezels are titanium similar to the iPhone 15 Pro. However, the screen has lost all its curves. The flat edges mean more space available for writing and doodling with the S Pen stylus, but it’s a big phone at 6.8 inches.
Samsung has also upgraded the 120Hz OLED display on the base and Plus versions. They now feature LTPO like the Ultra, so the display refresh rate can be dropped to 1Hz to save power when the phone is idle. The S24+ screen has also been upgraded from 1080p in the past few years to 1440p. However, don’t worry about the impact of this change on the battery. The S24+ has a fairly large battery capacity of 4,900mAh, while the S23+ has a battery capacity of 4,700mAh.
The phones will come with Android 14 pre-installed, and Samsung promises better update support than previous phones. The Galaxy S24 series will receive security patches and operating system updates for seven years (until early 2031). It’s also one of the biggest software updates for Samsung smartphones in years, largely thanks to the myriad of AI-related features arriving this generation.
Galaxy AI is a collection of features integrated with many of Samsung’s pre-installed apps. Live Translate, for example, claims to provide real-time translation of phone calls, while a similar “Interpreter” feature can translate conversations in real time so that both parties can read what the other is saying. Samsung notes that this feature works even without a data connection, which is rare for AI tools, even when phones have powerful machine learning hardware like the engine inside the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. If you’re too lazy to write, there’s also Chat Assistant for your own text replies, and Note Assist, which can summarize and create templates in Samsung Notes. Android Auto is the only non-Samsung app with Galaxy AI, which aggregates the messages you receive while driving.
The camera hardware of the base S24 and S24+ is unchanged from last year’s phones, but the processing power will be different thanks to the new Snapdragon chip and Galaxy AI. Galaxy AI brings a new set of editing tools to the S24 series. The phone can use artificial intelligence to suggest edits, and there’s even a full generative editing feature that can change and fill certain parts of an image with whatever you want. Interestingly, Samsung says images edited using generative AI will be watermarked so they can’t be passed off as real photos.
Galaxy S24 Ultra comes with S Pen compartment
The S24 Ultra features a new 50MP 5X telephoto camera, which replaces last year’s 10x 10MP shooter. While this sounds like an odd choice, it makes the zooming process much smoother (1x, 3x, 5x), and there’s enough resolution at 5x that you can still digitally zoom all the way to 100x.
The Galaxy S24 series will be available for pre-order starting today, and the phones will hit shelves on January 30. Pricing for the S24 and S24+ remains the same as last year, at $799 and $999 respectively. However, the price of the S24 Ultra has increased slightly. The phone will retail for $1,299, rather than starting at $1,200 like the S23 Ultra. If you’re buying a Galaxy S24, you might want to order it sooner rather than later. Samsung is offering higher trade-in values for older phones and a free storage upgrade for pre-orderers. We will review and launch it soon, so stay tuned.
