Google has invested heavily in artificial intelligence research over the past decade, and it paid off when researchers developed the Transformer algorithm in 2017 — but then took no action. Transformer is the underlying technology for all novel generative artificial intelligence applications. Microsoft was caught off guard when it integrated ChatGPT, but Google is back on track with the release of Gemini AI. A new report says Gemini is just the beginning. It is said that with the release of Pixel 9, Google plans to deploy the ultra-advanced artificial intelligence assistant Pixie based on Gemini.
Gemini AI comes in three different sizes, including a “nano” implementation for mobile devices. The model is already used on the company’s current Pixel phones to enhance smart reply and summary features in the Voice Recorder app. Since the model is designed to run on low-power devices, you don’t have to wait for a cloud server to generate the text and send it to you over the Internet. New reports suggest that this is just the first step for Pixie, which will be exclusive to Google Pixel devices.
As far as we know, Project Pixie is separate from what Google is doing with Assistant. The company said a new version of Assistant infused with Bard’s AI model is coming soon. Google demoed the new Assistant alongside the Pixel 8 at its Made By Google event. However, this could eventually become the basis for AI features on non-Google Android phones. Pixie might be a better solution, and making it exclusive to Pixel might give Google’s phone a much-needed boost.
according to information, Pixie will be able to pull data from mobile apps like Gmail and Maps, which will make it a more powerful and personalized version of Google Assistant. Since it runs on your device, it’s able to generate text and summaries even when you’re not online.
Google says Gemini is its most powerful large-scale language model ever, but it doesn’t excel in demos. Google’s impressive conversational Gemini demo turned out to be partially staged, reminiscent of Google’s botched Bard demo in early 2023. Crude editing aside, the interaction between Gemini and its human owner is impressive, even if it doesn’t happen in real time. The algorithm demonstrates better situational awareness and flexibility than Bard or traditional Google Assistant.
Stay tuned for more information about Pixie in the coming months. An official launch of the Pixel 9 at the Google I/O conference in mid-2024 is not unthinkable, but the Pixel 9 won’t be released until the fall.
