Kathmandu, February 24: The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has sought explanations from some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) over reports that they allowed the operation of social media platform TikTok, which has been banned by the government.
The government banned the popular website on the grounds that its content disturbed social harmony.
The NTA also warned that strict action will be taken against such service providers under the Telecommunications Act, 1997, if they violate the directives issued to implement government decisions.
Previously, the National Telecommunications Administration had written to all Internet service providers and mobile service providers, instructing them to ban TikTok in accordance with the government’s decision. However, TikTok is still accessible through some Internet service provider companies.
The NTA also calls on everyone to report any internet service provider that allows TikTok to operate via recontent@nta.gov.np. When providing information, the responsible Internet service provider company must be identified.
Previously, TikTok sent a letter to Nepal, promising to cooperate with government agencies to regulate its content, but the government has not yet made any decision on allowing it to operate in Nepal.
