OnePlus has remained mum on whether its upcoming smartwatches will stick with RTOS, but new clues suggest a move to Google’s Wear OS.
OnePlus sister company Oppo has teased the upcoming Watch X on X (formerly Twitter), which will launch on February 29th.
Meet your all-in-one companion #OPPOWatchX. Will launch on February 29, 2024. Stay tuned! #ElevateEveryMoment pic.twitter.com/b0wekt1coqFebruary 23, 2024
The hardware looks very similar to previous OnePlus Watch 2 press images, complete with angular side buttons. That said, there may be minor tweaks to the hardware.
OnePlus has confirmed that it will reveal the OnePlus Watch 2 at MWC on February 26, three days ahead of Oppo’s smartwatch launch. But the interesting part of Oppo’s post on the X is the small “Wear OS by Google” logo underneath the tagline. Small print at the bottom also states that it requires Android 8.0 or higher.
If Oppo’s next smartwatch is powered by Wear OS, it’s almost a sure thing that OnePlus’ upcoming wearable will also run the same operating system. Of course, it’s highly unlikely that the OnePlus Watch 2 will stick to its RTOS roots, but considering the two companies’ close ties, it seems unlikely.
It’s no surprise that Oppo and OnePlus are launching new Android smartwatches next week. Both companies are part of the same Chinese conglomerate, and it’s their business to launch similar devices with different names (think Oppo Find N3 and OnePlus Open).
Currently, some key specifications of the Oppo Watch X have been confirmed, including a 1.43-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 466 x 466. It will also come with a 500mAh battery that supports 10W charging.
Additionally, the OnePlus Watch 2 may include the same battery size as the Watch X, as revealed in the FCC listing (via 9to5Google ). Recently, OnePlus also confirmed that the watch can last up to 100 hours in smart mode.
Reaching 100 hours of stability with Wear OS would be quite a feat. We’d love to know what tricks OnePlus has up its sleeve to achieve this. The smartwatch marks a comeback for the Chinese company after a three-year hiatus.
