long story short
- Google is rolling out the at-a-glance directions feature to its Maps app broadly.
- The feature is available on Android and iOS.
- You need to turn this setting on before you can start using it.
Google Maps will become more useful on the lock screen. The app is getting a new setting called “View directions while navigating.”
Back in February 2023, Google announced that the Maps app on Android and iOS would get at-a-glance directions functionality. This feature will allow Android users to see where to turn and get a real-time ETA from the lock screen. It works on the route overview screen even if you don’t click “Start”. Google Maps on iPhone, meanwhile, will use Live Activity on iOS to implement the feature.
The feature was originally scheduled to launch globally in June 2023, but may only be available to a small group of users. But it looks like everyone can use it now.
The first thing discovered was Android Police, the feature now appears to be widely rolling out to users on Android version 11.116 and iOS version 6.104.2. I can also confirm that my own device now has a settings toggle, as shown below.

This switch is off by default, so you must enable this setting. This can be done by navigating to Settings and scrolling down Navigation Settings. You should find directions at a glance when navigating directly below the map display.
