CARROLLTON, Ala. (WIAT) – As of Tuesday evening, 26,000 internet, phone and video service customers in Pickens County were without internet connectivity.
Carrollton Mayor Mickey Walker said the VYVE Broadband substation on Highway 17 between Carrollton and Reform caught fire early Monday morning.
The fire destroyed an electrical substation, leaving many residents across the county without service. Walker said many local agencies and organizations have been affected.
“Bev State Community College, Pickens County College Career Center, Pickens College, the Police Department and the Pickens County Jail are all impacted and they are also impacted by phone service,” Walker said.
VYVE staff are on site working around the clock to make emergency repairs. They built a new substation and hope to restore service Wednesday or this weekend.
