Apple’s standard iPhone, unlike its pricier “Pro” phones, stubbornly sticks to a traditional 60Hz display, while the rest of the smartphone world embraces smoother high refresh rates. However, a new report suggests that Apple may finally be ready to make that leap, albeit not as quickly as some would like.

This shift from the LTPS technology currently used by non-Pro models will pave the way for ProMotion. ProMotion is Apple’s name for the 120Hz variable refresh rate technology that has been exclusive to Pro iPhone models since its launch in 2021.
As for why, one industry figure quoted in the report emphasized the need for differentiation:
Since there were very few product changes between last year’s iPhone 15 and this year’s iPhone 16 series, the iPhone 17 series needs to differentiate by applying LTPO to the lower product lines.
The move to LTPO panels (and ProMotion) makes sense for a number of reasons. ProMotion on the current-generation iPhone allows its display to dynamically adjust the refresh rate between a smooth 120Hz and a power-saving 1Hz. This flexibility translates into smoother visuals and animations when needed, while also optimizing battery life during static content display.
That’s why iPhone 14 Pro and 15 Pro models have always-on displays that show the clock, widgets, and notifications even when locked. This feature may be added to the entire iPhone 17 series, which is another exciting prospect for users.
The report also mentioned that Chinese supplier BOE is competing to provide Apple with the LTPO panels needed for the iPhone 17 series. If BOE fails to meet the requirements, the report suggests that Apple may turn to established suppliers such as Samsung and LG Display to ensure the implementation of LTPO, which means that we are unlikely to have to wait another year for ProMotion to be available on all iPhones.
