It might not be the first name that comes to mind when people talk about streaming services, but Sling TV offers just as much as the big guys like Netflix and Max. While they differ in that Sling focuses on live TV, one similarity between them is that some of their best features aren’t easily discovered by the average user.
Since launching in 2015, Sling has been steadily adding new features and ways to deliver an experience that brings the live TV experience into the modern era. Even though we’ve all come to terms with being freed from the cord, there’s still a learning curve to how live TV changes in the digital age. However, Sling TV offers a range of options that make watching TV easier than ever.
These tips and tricks can completely transform your streaming experience, which is why we’ve taken a deep dive into all the menus and options – so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the show in the best way possible.
What you can watch with Sling TV (and whether you should try it)
Sling TV is a live TV streaming service where you only pay for the channels you want. Here’s everything you need to know, including pricing and plan details.
1 Set your favorites
Hit the heartstrings on any channel
How to bookmark a channel.
Gone are the days of memorizing all your favorite channel numbers. However, we still have to browse through hundreds of channels when trying to find our favorite channel while watching a live broadcast. We all have go-to channels that we watch regularly, so setting them as favorites can get you to shows faster. All you need to do is click “Heart” The icon to the left of any channel marks it as a favorite. From there, you can access all your favorite channels in the Favorites tab at the top of the screen.
2 Use picture-in-picture
never miss a thing
Let’s face it, our attention spans are a little short these days. You might start watching a show but your mind starts to wander and you start wondering if there isn’t something better to watch. Or, if you live in a shared household, you’re likely to disagree on what to watch. Sling TV’s picture-in-picture feature provides a solution where you can play a second, smaller, muted program while another, smaller, muted program is playing on the rest of the screen. This can be perfect when you’re watching sports, as you don’t necessarily need to hear 100% of what’s going on or pay attention.
3 Choose your bandwidth
Video quality matters

For live streaming, how much bandwidth you have is more important than pre-recorded TV or movies.
In the latter case, you can always pause to buffer the stream and get a great image, but that’s not the case with live streaming. You might think you have no control over the internet speed beyond what you have access to, but you can actually choose how much bandwidth Sling will use for better pictures, and even limit it so you don’t exceed any data limits.
To select your desired bandwidth limit, enter set up, Then Video quality, then select one of the four options that best suits your situation. If you’re watching on PC, just click gear icon to select your settings.
4 Integrate all your services
Stream HBO content with Sling TV

If you do it right, Sling TV can pretty much be your one-stop shop for all your entertainment. If you want to watch something on HBO, Starz, AMC+ or Starz, you can integrate it into Sling – so you have it all in one place. Depending on which channels you want to add and which Sling subscription you subscribe to, you’ll need to pay more per month to access them.
The easiest way to add a new channel is through the paid streaming page of the Sling website. This page allows you to sort and search for any premium channel you want.
5 Save your favorite recordings
Click the lock button

In addition to streaming channels, Sling has DVR functionality that lets you record 50 or 200 hours of TV and movies, depending on whether you add DVR Plus. Either way, eventually you might start running out of space without even realizing it.
Normally, when you reach your recording time threshold, Sling will automatically make room for new recordings by deleting your oldest saved recordings. If you want to make sure your recordings are never deleted (unless you do it yourself), go into the DVR menu and find any episode or movie you want to protect. Here, just click Lock button to prevent automatic deletion.
6 Navigate using voice commands
You need support for Alexa or Google Nest devices
There’s no shame in losing your remote – we’ve been there more times than we can count. In the modern era, that doesn’t mean you can’t use your TV anymore, as voice control is integrated into just about everything.
While there’s no direct Sling voice control, if you have an Alexa- or Google Nest-enabled device, you can pair it with the Sling app for navigation. You can’t do everything with just your voice, but there are currently many options supported, such as:
- Alexa, turn on the sling
- Alexa, go to Sling TV
- Alexa, required (channel name)
- Alex, time out
- Alex, resume
- Alexa, rewind (will rewind 30 seconds)
- Alexa, rewind 10 seconds
- Alexa, go back 1 minute
- Alexa, fast forward (forward 30 seconds)
- Alexa, fast forward 5 minutes
- Alex, start over.
- Alexa, play from scratch

Sling TV is all about cutting the cable, so why can you only use it on your TV?
Not only does Sling work on a host of TVs, game consoles, and streaming sticks, but it can also accompany you on long trips or flights via your phone or tablet. You can access Sling through the Chrome or Safari browsers without a download or app, or you can download the dedicated Sling TV app from the App or Android Market.
8 Do not show duplicate channels
Keep feed clean
Sling TV Duplicate Channel Options.
If you do choose to buy Sling TV’s Orange and Blue plans as a bundle, or through a combination of other add-ons added to the service, you’ll end up subscribing to multiple channels more than once. While it might seem like a no-brainer to only show you a channel once, Sling TV will show you the same channel multiple times by default if you end up getting it multiple ways.To clear your channel guide you need to go to set up then enter my account. From here, just check the box in the lower left corner that says “Show only Sling Blue versions of duplicate channels in the channel guide.”

FAQ
Q: What is a sling TV?
Sling TV is a streaming service that specializes in live channels without a cable subscription. While it also offers on-demand shows and movies, it stands out by offering live shows and sports just like a regular cable connection. However, instead of an extremely expensive plan, Sling TV allows you to subscribe to specific channel bundles or subscribe to individual channels you know you want.
Q: How much does Sling TV cost?
Sling TV has two basic plans: Orange and Blue. Both cost $40 per month, but bundle different channels, and you can only watch Orange’s shows on one device at a time, while Blue allows viewing on three devices. You can also subscribe to Orange + Blue to get the benefits of both at a discounted rate of $55 per month. With either bundle, you can add a host of extra features, such as DVR Plus for more recording space and a variety of channels individually or packaged.
