Elon Musk says new ‘exciting’ Roadster will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than a second

Tesla CEO Elon Musk says the upcoming Roadster will surprise you.

No, this is not enough. He did say it would be “exciting,” but to fully convey his excitement for the car, we have to quote some of Musk’s tweets, which he shared in quick succession on Wednesday.

“Tonight, we radically raised the bar on the design goals of the new Tesla Roadster. There will never be another car like it, if you can even call it a car,” Musk wrote.

He also said that the car will actually be a Tesla/SpaceX collaboration, which may fit his statement previous comments The Roadster is “actually capable of brief flight.”

What about performance? Musk claims 0-60 mph will be under one second. “That’s the boring part,” he said Tweet.

Once this matter is revealed have “Aiming to be the most exciting product demonstration ever,” Musk wrote.

Exciting, the man said. If you weren’t jumping up and down with excitement, would you still be alive?

Well, you may also remember that this car – the successor to the first-generation Tesla Roadster from 2008 – was originally announced in 2017, with production scheduled to begin in 2020. Then it was postponed to 2022, then to 2023. It is now 2024, and Musk claims that the production design has been completed and plans to launch a new, new, new Roadster by the end of 2024, with the goal of shipping next year. That’s 2025if you can count.

Over time, the Roadster’s specifications changed. For example, it was supposed to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 1.1 seconds. It’s not hard to shorten those times on a car that’s not yet on the market. In fact, I have a car that reaches supersonic speeds. In my mind.

Putting aside the wild predictions and hyperbole (which we will never resort to) and reading between the lines, you might notice that this is probably basically a way for Elon to say that they have essentially scrapped the new, new, Old Roadster, they’re (once again) building a brand new one. We’re still very interested in seeing the Roadster on the road or in the sky. We just aren’t waiting with bated breath for launch.
