Nominations sought for 2024 National Medal of Technology and Innovation; questions will be answered in March 12 webinar
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is seeking nominations for the 2024 National Medal of Technology and Innovation (NMTI), the nation’s highest honor for technological achievement, awarded by the President of the United States.
The NMTI Medal is awarded to individuals, teams (up to four people), and companies or divisions of companies in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the country. The medal honors American innovators whose vision, ingenuity, creativity and determination have strengthened America’s economy and improved our quality of life.
Past winners (medal winners) include:
- Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak invented the personal computer (1985);
- Grace Murray Hopper for her seminal achievements in developing computer programming languages that simplified computer technology (1991);
- Jim West co-invented the electret microphone (2006);
- Frances Arnold’s groundbreaking research into biofuels and chemicals could lead to substitution of pollution-generating materials (2011);
- Rory A. Cooper develops cutting-edge wheelchair technology and mobility devices (2023).
Anyone can submit an NMTI nomination by using the online nomination form and providing a letter of support. All nominations must be received by the USPTO by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on May 3, 2024. We encourage nominations of candidates from traditionally underrepresented groups.
