To me, Hexage is one of those developers that hearkens back to the early days of the App Store and the beginnings of iPhone gaming.I spent a lot of collective time playing games like totmo, shining, radiation defense, Ivank, reaper……The list goes on.So I was excited to see another new game coming out this week from Hexage called flying tankand even more delightfully, it’s another very good game from the developer.
It is a horizontal scrolling shooter that takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting where aliens have arrived on Earth and humans have decided to greet them peacefully. The giant aliens are just hanging out in the sky, doing their own thing, and humans have been doing their own thing. But slowly, the aliens began to consume the earth’s resources and take over the earth, and since humans have lived with them for a long time, they are not powerful enough to fight them off.
Their solution is to… basically nuke the entire planet. Let me tell you, this didn’t go as planned. The aliens still reign supreme, and humanity is almost completely wiped out in the process, with those who survive splitting into different factions. You and your fleet of flying tanks act like a hired thug, blowing up aliens and humans alike in 24 different missions and trying to help take back Earth from the aliens.
Controller support flying tank, and the game plays very well, but it’s also a game designed specifically for touch screens. The default controls have your ships and tanks follow your finger, but there are options to use relative touch, which is my preference. You fire the main cannon by tapping the screen or holding Rapid Fire, swipe right to fire special weapons, and swipe down to drop bombs. Yes, in addition to air enemies, there are also ground enemies. You also have another special ability, usually a shield, mapped to the upward swipe.
The result is an extremely capable killing machine with a sophisticated arsenal of weapons and defenses, all mapped to easy-to-use tap and swipe gestures. Having complete control over your arsenal and being able to make strategic decisions about when and where to fire weapons or deploy special abilities is much more fun than in many mobile shooters, where your ship just fires automatically and you just guide it through the game That’s it. For lack of a better term, this feels like a “real” shooter rather than something dumbed down for the touch screen.
Combat is a blast, there’s no shortage of things to customize and upgrade your fleet of flying tanks, and with so many awesome and unique weapons and enemies, it’s truly unlike any other shooter. There’s a lot to do in this game, but I also found myself really enjoying the story aspect.the best is flying tank There are 8 missions available to download and try for free, and if you complete them and like what you see, there are a few different options to unlock the full game, depending on whether you like the extra goodies or not. Personally, I like the extra goodies, so I bought the deluxe unlocked version, but I’m glad there are cheaper options. If you like shooters and a premium mobile gaming experience, you can’t go wrong flying tank.
