Two Idiots Build a PC – Sponsored by NVIDIA and PC Specialist

What happens when you ask a complete idiot to build a modern gaming PC from scratch? In theory, they’ll end up with a nice, working computer, because now in 2024, building a computer has never been easier. But, to paraphrase the old saying, every time they make PC building idiot-proof, someone comes up with a better idiot-proof one.

So when NVIDIA and www.PCSpecialist.co.uk contacted us to test this theory, now even an idiot can get a good gaming 4070 Super powered machine, whether through the DIY route or ordering a professionally built machine through PC Specialist Gear Online Configurator, we jumped at the chance to send out our best and worst: video producer Jim Trinca and mobile reporter Connor Makar to prove it They are wrong. None of them had built or designed a personal computer before. Neither of them had a CPU cooler installed. Heck, neither of them have a screwdriver.

None of them can properly explain the benefits of DLSS 3, NVIDIA’s latest performance-doubling technology on 40-series GPUs, even in demanding, ray-tracing-enabled games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Hitman: World of Assassination. The game also delivers extremely fast frame rates. That’s why their efforts will be overseen by VG247’s long-suffering technologist Alex Donaldson, who comments on the quality and speed of the build in a brief clip of the video, but doesn’t hold his head in his hands in utter disbelief.

As the benchmarks in the video show, the 4070 Super can achieve gorgeous path-traced reflections and silky-smooth frame rates.

One of our idiots will build a 4070 Super-based PC using a collection of boxed parts, while another idiot will configure their PC on PC Specialist’s website. Each computer will then be compared on baseline performance, build quality, and aesthetic appeal. Benchmarks include 3DMark’s DLSS functional test and Cyberpunk 2077’s built-in test sequence. We also played a lot of games that support DLSS 3, such as The Witcher 3, Starfield, A Plague Tale: Requiem, and Marvel’s Midnight Sun.

So, who will win this most technical challenge? Does the pride of building your own machine make up for the fact that you forgot to install the blind plate? Which one of them set off the damn fire alarm? All these questions are answered in Two Idiots Build a PC, sponsored by NVIDIA and PC Specialist!
