With the release of Fuchsia version 16, the Google Nest Hub smart display has received its first update since November 2023. It’s rolling out starting now on all three Google smart displays: Google Nest Hub, Google Nest Hub Max, and Google Nest Hub (2nd-generation). According to the official Fuchsia release notes for version 16, the update mainly includes bug fixes for Nest Hub connection issues.
9to5Google first spotted the release and was the first to point out that these Nest Hub devices jumped directly from version 14 to version 16. This means they only need a single update to get the benefits of version 15 and version 16. The software is rolling out to preview program users and Google Nest Hub devices running the current production version of Fuchsia.
The biggest bug fixes that come with the Fuchsia version 16 update are related to connectivity. For Bluetooth, the update fixes an issue with Nest Hub devices not being able to see certain headphones on the Bluetooth devices page. Other fixes include addressing volume control issues when using a Nest Hub device as a speaker, as well as an issue that caused media to not show up on a paired phone.
Finally, the Fuchsia version 16 update also resolves a niche Bluetooth issue where “audio is not sent to the headphones when connected during a Duo call.”
Additionally, the Fuchsia version 16 update includes the following improvements to Matter and Thread support:
- Added support for air quality sensors.
- Added support for subscribing to all device structures.
- Added support for Matter update groups.
- Added transition time handling for color-related commands.
- TREL was introduced to minimize Thread partitioning and reduce Thread network usage.
The process has certainly been slow, but support for more Matter accessories is a positive step forward in the transition. Ultimately, smart home devices should work well together through the common standards of Matter and Thread. After the update, Nest Hub devices will support the new air quality sensor.
Nest Hub devices should automatically get the Fuchsia version 16 update, and it’s starting to roll out now without any action from the user.
