what you need to know
- Meta will delete Oculus accounts on March 29, 2024, and deleted user data will not be recoverable at that time.
- Information removed will include apps and in-app purchases, existing app store credits, achievements, friend lists, and user-created content.
- To preserve your data, you can follow the steps below to convert your Oculus account to a Meta account.
If you’re a Meta Quest user who hasn’t converted your Oculus account to a Meta account yet, there’s still time — but it’s running out. Meta explained in an email to users that it will permanently delete Oculus accounts on March 29, 2024. You can create a Meta account to replace your Oculus account at any time before that date, but you don’t want to wait too long.
Meta said that if not transferred, apps and in-app purchases, existing app store credits, achievements, friend lists, and user-created content will all be removed. Once deleted, the data cannot be recovered.
You may have converted your Oculus account to a Meta account. The company stopped letting users create Oculus accounts back in 2020. It requires users to convert Oculus accounts to Meta accounts in October 2022 and blocks Oculus account logins in January 2023. Meta has been trying to eliminate Oculus accounts for years.
Fortunately, it’s an easy transition. All you need is the email address associated with your Oculus ID. From there, you can access the portal and create a new account using the same email linked to your Oculus ID. After that, any content stored in your Oculus account will be automatically moved to your new Meta account.
Meta is sending an email to notify users who may have been affected by the planned removal. The email states: “In order to maintain access to the above items, you may be required to migrate to a Meta account using the email address associated with your Oculus ID by March 29, 2024.” Emphasis on “maybe” word, because some users who had switched to meta accounts also received this email.
If you’re not sure whether your account has been converted, you can always try the process for a few minutes. If you’ve already completed the migration, you won’t be able to create a new account using the email associated with your Oculus ID. Since your data is at risk of being lost, it’s worth double-checking.
