Google’s Tensor G4 SoC will launch later this year, powering the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and possibly the Pixel Fold 2. A new report from South Korea today confirms previous rumors that the G4 will be manufactured by Samsung. It will use 4nm process.
Tensor G4 will obviously have improved thermal management, as well as better performance and greater efficiency. So it looks like it’s an improvement over the G3 in every way, which is definitely good news considering the previous chipset didn’t win any awards.
Interestingly, the Exynos 2400 features prominently in the Samsung Galaxy S24 and S24+ this year, likely bringing more customers to Samsung’s foundries because of its popularity – at least for the Exynos. It could just be that everyone had such low expectations for it that it managed to outperform everyone, but in the end the reason doesn’t really matter, it’s just that Samsung’s foundries can now make more money with it.
Some voices in the tech world, including Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and Open AI CEO Sam Altman, appear to want to reduce their reliance on Taiwan’s TSMC for chip manufacturing, as TSMC currently has about 50% of the market. Samsung seems ready and definitely willing to help with this.
