Huawei announced today that it has signed a multi-year patent cross-licensing agreement with vivo, a month after Nokia signed the same agreement. The Chinese smartphone maker has agreed to pay royalties on 5G technology, opening the door for the company to do business in countries where Huawei owns certain 5G patents.
Fan Allen, director of Huawei’s Intellectual Property Department, said the agreement reflects “mutual respect for the value of each other’s patents.” This will pave the way for future cooperation between the two companies.
The executive added that the two companies are co-funding research and working on standardization and sharing innovations. Vivo has not yet issued a statement.
This is the second major deal Huawei has signed in the past 24 hours, the other being with Amazon. It will allow the American company to use patented technologies related to WiFi and video playback in Germany and around the world.
