Not perfect, but a good start
Ars Technica had a chance to check out the new Framework Laptop 16, a gaming version of its modular Laptop 13. It retains the same ability to swap input and output without shutting down the machine, but it adds a new interesting feature. The Laptop 16 features replaceable GPU modules, allowing you to finally upgrade to an AMD Radeon RX 7700S. The GPU connection is unspecified PCIe 8x, which is actually a physical interposer consisting of two surfaces filled with copper contacts for data and power, pressed against each other with screws. Once Framework starts selling other models, you may have to shut down the laptop to swap out the GPU.
However, all is not perfect, and for this model, only some frame ports support true 40Gbps USB 4 speeds or offer display output, and some ports draw extra power if you plug a USB-A card into them. This is different from the previous Intel-only version, which had no restrictions on any ports. As long as you pay attention to where you insert the components, you shouldn’t have a problem.
