- Gemini Nano will be used in more high-end devices in the near future.
The Pixel 8 Pro comes with Gemini Nano, leaving Pixel 8 users wondering when on-device AI will arrive on the base model. It seems the answer to this question is no.
Today, Google launched the latest episode of #TheAndroidShow, which discussed several topics including MWC, Android 15, and Gemini Nano. However, when the show got into the Q&A portion, there was an interesting revelation.
Google developer relations engineer Terence Zhang said the Gemini Nano will not appear on the Pixel 8. The reason Gemini Nano skipped the Pixel 8 seems to be “due to some hardware limitations.”
While the Pixel 8 will miss out on the Gemini Nano, AI should be coming to other devices soon. Zhang went on to say that Google is currently working to bring the mobile-friendly LLM to more mobile devices. However, he added that artificial intelligence will appear on top-end high-end devices.
Gemini Nano is Google’s smallest artificial intelligence model designed to run natively on smartphones and other low-power devices. It’s unclear exactly what hardware limitations are preventing Google from adding AI to the Pixel 8. We’ve reached out to Google for further clarification and will update this article when more information becomes available.
