How to add AirPods to a Find My network
Paired AirPods should be added automatically
In order to use the Find My app to locate your AirPods, you need to make sure Find My Network is enabled on your iPhone or iPad. If you want to find your AirPods when they are offline, you must turn on the Find My network before losing them. When you pair your AirPods with a device with Find My enabled, they should automatically be added to the Find My network.
- Open set up App for iPhone or iPad.
- Click your Apple ID At the top of the Settings screen.

How to find your AirPods by playing sound
Track AirPods by ear
Once you add your AirPods to the Find My app, you can use the app to track them. You can find your AirPods using the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, or on your browser by logging into the iCloud website. If your AirPods are nearby, one of the easiest ways to find them is to ask them to play sound.
Frustratingly, for all AirPods models except AirPods Pro (2nd generation), this feature only works when the AirPods are removed from the charging case. You won’t be able to get them to play sound if inside a case. However, if you have AirPods Pro (2nd generation), you can also play sound from the charging case.
- Open find my app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac, or sign into your Apple account on the iCloud website and select find my app.

- Your AirPods will start playing sound as soon as they are removed from the charging case.
- If you have AirPods Pro (2nd generation), the charging case can play sound even with the AirPods inside.

If your AirPods are close to you, you can use Look for function to track their location. If you have 3rd generation AirPods, AirPods Pro (1st generation), or AirPods Max, the Find feature tells you when you are closer to or farther away from your AirPods. If your AirPods Pro (2nd generation) have a U1 Ultra Wideband chip in their case, you can use Pinpoint Finder on a compatible iPhone. This will give you directions to your AirPods, tell you how far away they are, and even tell you if they’re on different floors.

How to get directions to your AirPods if they’re not nearby
Navigate to the location where your AirPods were last detected
If your AirPods are not nearby, the Find feature won’t work. However, Find should still have the last known location of your AirPods. You can use Routes to navigate to where your AirPods were last detected using Apple Maps, then track them when you’re nearby.
- Open find my application and click equipment Label.
- Choose your AirPods.
- If you’re too far away from your AirPods, instead Look for button and you will see a route button.
- Click route button and Apple Maps will open, giving you directions from your current location to the last known location of your AirPods.
- Follow the instructions and when you get to the location, try one of the methods above to track your AirPods.
How to put AirPods into lost mode
Improve your chances of finding AirPods
If you can’t find your AirPods at all, you can put them into lost mode. This feature won’t work if you own first- or second-generation AirPods, but it works on all other models. Lost Mode sends you a notification when your AirPods’ location becomes available, locks your AirPods to your Apple ID so others can’t pair them, and lets you leave a phone number or email to contact you if You contact: Anyone can find them.
- Open find my application and click equipment.
- Select your AirPods from the list of devices.
- Swipe up the bottom half of the screen and you should see the following options: Mark as missing.

- Follow the on-screen instructions to add your contact information.
- If your AirPods come online again, you’ll receive a notification on your iPhone or iPad.

Q: What if my AirPods are in different locations?
If you lose two AirPods and they are in different locations, the location of one AirPod will be displayed in the Find My app. Find the AirPod and place it back in the charging case. Refresh the map and the location of the other AirPod will appear, allowing you to find it as well.
Q: If my AirPods are offline or cannot be found, can I find them?
If your AirPods are offline or their location cannot be found, you won’t be able to make them play sound or use the Find feature. However, you can still use the Directions button to get directions to its last known location. If they come back online, you’ll receive a notification on your iPhone or other Apple device.
Q: Can you use Find to locate your AirPods case?
For most AirPods models, Find Your AirPods can only find them when they are removed from the charging case. You can’t trace the case itself. However, if you have AirPods Pro (2nd generation), you can track your AirPods and charging case, which means you can find your AirPods even if they’re hidden inside the charging case.
