long story short
- A leaked document shows that T-Mobile is lowering the activation fee for new lines from $35 to $5.
- This promotion starts today, March 8, but there’s no word on when it will end.
Existing or potential T-Mobile customers frustrated by device connection charge (DCC) fees may get some relief.A leaked internal document was released by mobile report Revealed T-Mobile’s surprising move to significantly reduce DCC for a limited time.
DCC is a one-time flat fee for phone upgrades and new line activation. This has long been a point of contention among customers. This flat fee, typically $35, can add significant upfront costs, especially for homes adding multiple lines.
T-Mobile is slashing DCC on new lines to $5 starting today (March 8, 2024), according to leaked documents. This represents a significant $30 discount and applies to all activation methods, including online, in-store, and phone support.
It’s worth noting that the discount only applies to new lines. Customers upgrading their phones on existing lines will still be charged the full $35 fee. However, those who add new lines will benefit greatly. For example, a family of five who switches to T-Mobile can save $150 on DCC, bringing the total cost down to $25.
The document also clarifies that the promotion applies to phones purchased through a device installment plan or new lines activated with customer-owned devices brought to T-Mobile. T-Mobile for Business customers who add a new line are also eligible for discounted rates.
While we await an official announcement from T-Mobile, the filing simply lists the end date as “to be announced.” So it remains to be seen how long this strategy will last. However, for those considering switching to T-Mobile, now might be a good time to take advantage of significant savings with new activation.
