The exorbitant cost of living in New York City has once again sparked public outrage as a viral video showing a studio apartment in Manhattan’s Nolita area costing around Rs 2 lakh per month has shocked internet users.
The video, shared by real estate agent David Okocha on Instagram, has been viewed more than 3.1 million times, fueling concerns over the city’s ongoing housing crisis. In the video, viewers were given a tour of a poorly designed studio apartment, prompting harsh criticism from social media users.
The video, titled “Is this the worst layout you’ve ever seen?”, shows a cramped living space and questionable design choices. One person commented: “The price doesn’t leave much money left for treatment because you’d be depressed living here.”
Another user expressed disbelief and suggested, “The audacity of New York’s rental market should be taken to the Supreme Court.”
“As a landlord I can seriously say this should be illegal and this landlord should be jailed,” said a third.
Criticism of the studio’s layout intensified when viewers noticed that the shower was located very close to the kitchen, separated only by a flimsy plastic sheet. In addition, the toilet seat is placed in a narrow area, there is no sink, and the washing machine is randomly inserted into the room, making it uncomfortable.
This latest uproar stems from a trend of viral videos showing the challenges facing affordable housing in New York City. Earlier, real estate agent Omer Labock drew attention to the “smallest apartment” in Manhattan that can be rented for $1,200 per month, which is approximately Rs 99,482.
