Google has been spotted experimenting with a new feature in the Phone app that will let you easily switch from regular calls to Google Meet video calls with just one tap.
Some users saw fresh video call As Android Police discovered, the chip was added to the Phone app when they made regular calls. This new button pops up above the keyboard, mute, speakers, and other options.
If you click on the chip, it will initiate a Google Meet video call with the person you’re chatting with. Their phones rang, but the voice call continued, making the switch much smoother than before.
This shows that Google Meet aims to be more than just a business tool. With this potential feature in the Phone app, Meet appears to be looking to become a bigger part of our daily mobile chats.
For a while, iPhone users could easily use FaceTime in the dialer. Soon, Android users may also experience this as video calling is seamlessly integrated into the Phone app.
If the person you’re trying to call doesn’t have the Meet app installed, tapping the chip will take you to a screen suggesting you invite them to use Google Meet for a video chat.
According to Android Police, some users saw this feature on versions 125.0.613053162-publicbeta-pixel2023 and 124.0.608164421-publicbeta. Since it appears on different app versions, it seems like the feature may be a server-side tweak.
So far, the feature is only available on Pixel phones. But since the Google Phone app isn’t exclusive, there’s a chance it could make its way to other devices in the future.
Not everyone has access to this new trick yet. It looks like it’s on its way, but it may take some time to get to everyone.
