From sky-high prices to high agent fees and application fees, renting in New York can be a real pain in the ass. That’s why people are forced to live in small apartments with almost no space.
Recently, a video of a home tour showing a small studio apartment in Murray Hill, New York, shocked the internet. The video, shared by ocr_realty on Instagram, shows a cramped studio apartment with poor structural design. However, the monthly rent is a whopping $2,650 (Rs. 2,19,089).
“Is this the smallest studio space you’ve ever seen?”, the caption read. In the video, the real estate agent says: “I’m going to show you one of the least livable studio apartments, so when we walked in, our kitchen was on the right and there was outdoor space. But that’s not what we’re here for The purpose is, look at that, what’s this, this is your whole studio space, that’s it.” The bedroom is so small that it can barely fit a normal-sized bed, and the wardrobe space and kitchen area are just namesake.

Netizens were shocked after watching the video and couldn’t believe that such a small apartment cost a lot of money. Many also expressed serious concerns about the city’s exorbitant cost of living and questioned housing affordability.
One user wrote: “That glass door leading outside is a burglary.”
Another commented, “This apartment really shouldn’t cost more than $500.” A third said, “That outdoor space gets filled with rats at night.” Apartments like this shouldn’t be legal. “
A fourth wrote: “2650?!?!? How is this legal? More importantly, why do people even let landlords get away with this? Who would rent this thing?”
A fifth added, “That’s not a studio, that’s a hallway foyer with a mini bathroom and kitchenette… I doubt you could even fit a bed in it because of how offset and curved that little room is… …don’t do it! More space in my camping tent! ! ! “
Population growth, housing demand, remote working, changes in rent laws, and lack of supply are some of the reasons why rents are high in the city.
