Samsung just launched the Galaxy A55 5G, positioning it as the next mid-range smartphone for most people. While the Galaxy A55 looks great on paper, there’s another smartphone you should consider if you’re in the market for a mid-range Android phone: the upcoming Google Pixel 8a. Google is widely expected to update the Pixel 8a in the coming months, possibly around the Google I/O conference in May. So that begs the question: will you buy the Galaxy A55 or wait for the Pixel 8a?
If we look back to last year, Samsung and Google were aiming to capture the mid-range market share with the Galaxy A54 and Pixel 7a respectively.

In the Galaxy A54 vs Pixel 7a comparison, Samsung’s main advantages are design, display, microSD support, and better battery and charging, while Google is ahead in terms of SoC and wireless charging capabilities. The Galaxy A54 has a solid camera, but the Pixel 7a performed well in a blind camera test.
While the Pixel 7a won a lot of love upon its launch, the Galaxy A54 benefited from Samsung’s vast marketing and distribution network, making it popular across the globe.
What will it look like in 2024? The Galaxy A55 sports a better design, now using metal and glass, while also being upgraded to the newer Exynos 1480 SoC. Samsung has taken one of its trusty mid-range products and made it even better. Galaxy A55 pricing in Europe is impressive, starting at €479 (approximately $525) for the 8GB + 128GB version. For reference, the Galaxy A54 starts at $449 for the 6GB + 128GB version, although US pricing for the Galaxy A55 remains to be seen.
The Pixel 8a is also expected to bring some key upgrades. For one, it could refresh its design to look similar to the Pixel 8 but more rounded, which would be nice. The next upgrade may be the Tensor SoC, and the Pixel 8a may be equipped with Tensor G3. We also expect Google to maintain its camera prowess on the Pixel 8a. Beyond that, the leaked information doesn’t describe the upgrade in detail, so we’ll still have to wait to learn more.
Having said all that, what will you do? Would you choose the Galaxy A55 5G now? Or would you rather wait and buy a Pixel 8a? Or do you have other ideas in the mid-range market? Tell us in the poll below!
