Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Free expansion was so good, in fact, that it ended up in some GOTY debates despite being a DLC. That’s a pretty high bar to try and match, but the game director believes CD Projekt is definitely capable of doing it.
While some sneaky additions are still making their way into the original game, a lot of attention has begun to shift to the sequel, codenamed Project Orion, with CD Projekt officially starting work on the game earlier this year. We already know the studio has pretty high expectations for it, and Gabe Amatangelo seems to think it has a good chance of at least matching Phantom of the Opera.

Amatangelo became the game director of Cyberpunk 2077 in May 2021, and thus played a key role in the game’s turnaround after a poor performance during the launch of Cyberpunk 2077. . “For the studio. Why does he believe this?”
Well, the main reason seems to be that the CD Projekt team has developed more efficient working habits when developing expansion packs – Amatangelo said they treat expansion packs as sequels to the base game. “The biggest change is just to give everyone more freedom,” the developer revealed, “so that they can just create and not have to worry about a game director checking every little thing.”
Amatangelo also mentioned allowing more mixing between development teams from different departments, an approach that looks to allow for more seamless collaboration in the creation of things like the game’s sparse animations and dialogue sequences. It also seems to reflect one of the main goals the developers aim to achieve with gameplay through DLC – to make certain parts of the game (such as side missions) feel more connected to everything else going on (especially the main storyline) contact.
So here’s hoping the studio’s success with this approach translates to Project Orion and takes it to similar heights as Phantom Free, and maybe even beyond, an adventure about a president, hackers, and Idris Elba .
