The culinary world is no stranger to innovative and sometimes unconventional fusions, but the latest creation to create a buzz among netizens and foodies alike is the Gulab Jamun pizza.
This dish attempts to incorporate the beloved savory dessert gulab jamun into everyone’s favorite fast food pick of pizza. Pairing this gooey, delicious Gulab Jamun on a classic paneer pizza has sparked curiosity and skepticism on social media.
A video that recently went viral shows off this unusual production process pizzastarting with pizza dough and then topping it with syrup that appears to be from Gulab Jamuns instead of traditional pizza sauce. The creator then breaks up the gulab jam made from fried dough balls, pours it into the syrup, sprinkles it over the dough and then covers it with a thick layer of cheese. Once baked, Italian pizza is based on a flat wheat base, topped with cheese, herbs and vegetables, and garnished with dessert halves for a non-traditional, visually interesting meal.
Food innovation meets criticism
The video, shared by Instagram user @realfoodler, has been viewed more than 220,000 times and sparked heated debate in the comments section. Social media users don’t shy away from expressing their opinions, ranging from sarcastic advice to outright criticism. Comments such as “Next time use lardi instead of cheese”, “Italians are crying in the corner” and “This is where we should draw the line between the two dishes” reflect the polarizing views on the latest culinary experiment.
The fusion of gulab jamun and pizza also marks the rapid growth of fusing traditional and international cuisines to create entirely new dishes. While such innovations can sometimes lead to wonderful discoveries, they also risk crossing the line between creativity and eccentricity.
