While this may be a somewhat arbitrary confirmation, Ready Player One A sequel is coming—just don’t count on Steven Spielberg at the helm.
It’s no surprise that Ready Player One is getting a sequel, as it made a ton of money at the box office, and now Spielberg himself has confirmed that a sequel is, in fact, in the works. In an interview with Showbiz411 after the Oscars, when asked about what’s next for the longtime director, he said: “We’re in the discovery phase, trying to figure out what’s next.” Spielberg was also Asked specifically about a sequel to Ready Player One, he said he would only be producing one this time and confirmed that the film is in the works.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of a sequel – the book’s original author, Ernest Cline, told Inverse in 2020 that it’s “in the early stages right now, especially given the trouble Hollywood is in right now ,” he said, referring to the coronavirus pandemic that has shut down the film industry. It is speculated that the film will be adapted from the 2020 novel Ready Player Two, also written by Crane, which once again tells the story of protagonist Wade Watts as he once again searches for a new mysterious prize. Who says Ready Player One isn’t creative?
A full six years have passed since the first Ready Player One movie was released in 2018, so if this sequel ends up being released, it could be nearly a decade since the first one was released. But I’m sure it’ll still make a ton of money because there’s nothing people love more than being able to point at the screen and say “Oh, hey, I know that one!”
There aren’t any other details about the movie, so now you’ll just have to wait and see who ends up directing it and if any actors will return – or if it will follow the plot of the second book.
