LG has officially announced its 2024 OLED TV lineup, including the LG C4. At the heart of the line, the C-Series TVs have always been the perfect combination of features and price, making the TVs one of the most popular models in LG’s OLED lineup. We loved the LG C3 when we reviewed it last year, and we expected the C4 to join the LG C3 as one of the best smart TVs on the market.

The official launch date for the new OLEDs is March 18, 2024, including the LG C4. It comes in 42, 48, 55, 65, 77 and 83-inch models, with prices starting at $1,500 for the 42-inch and $5,400 for the 83-inch. These models are available for pre-order now, but before you buy, there are some other interesting things you might want to know about the LG C4.

1 It has a more powerful processor than its predecessor

The LG C4 isn’t the most powerful, but it’s an improvement

The LG C3 is equipped with LG’s Alpha 9 AI processor Gen6, commonly written as a9 Gen6. It’s a perfectly serviceable processor, but the LG C4 performs slightly better. It comes with an upgraded Alpha 9 AI processor, which LG says will improve the TV’s performance.

While more testing is needed, the upgraded chipset should enable faster WebOS interactions, better upgrades, and improved motion handling on the LG C3.

Only the LG G4 and M4 will feature more powerful processors and the many new AI features LG is bringing to the show this year, with the top-of-the-line Alpha 11 AI processor, also known as the a11. According to LG, the a11 is significantly faster than its predecessor. Although the C4 misses out on top-end performance, its upgraded a9 processor still makes the experience better.

There’s another improvement with the upgraded processor, one that’s worth mentioning in its own right. The LG C4 will run at 144 Hz, an upgrade from the LG C3’s 120 Hz. Indeed, the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 won’t be able to take advantage of the higher refresh rates. However, enterprising PC users who want to use an OLED TV as a monitor can certainly do so, and it will provide a smoother desktop experience than older LG OLED TVs.

This improvement is entirely due to the upgraded processor, as the LG C4 has the same panel as the LG C3. This means that all improvements come from within rather than from outside. Additionally, the C4 will come with AMD FreeSync and full Nvidia G-Sync VRR certification. The latter is an upgraded version of the LG C3.

3 LG C4 is brighter and more colorful than its predecessor

LG hasn’t announced specific details yet, but the C4 will be brighter than the C3

During CES 2024, LG’s David Seperson told What HiFi that “all C4s will be brighter this year than last year.” Additionally, the 42- and 48-inch models are generally not as bright as their larger counterparts, but their brightness will be There are bigger upgrades that make them more equal to other models in the range.

So no matter which size you’re looking for, it’s going to be brighter than last year, considering the MLA display technology that made the LG G3 brighter than the C3 didn’t trickle down to LG’s C-series TVs this year, as some experts initially expected. The difference isn’t huge, but considering the C3 is still best used in darker rooms, the increase in brightness might help change things with the C4. Perhaps by 2025, MLA technology will enter the mid-range market of LG’s OLED product line.

4 LG C4 should sound better than LG C3

Sound quality is one of our biggest criticisms of the C3

Sound quality was one of the biggest drawbacks when we reviewed the LG C3, and we weren’t the only ones who thought so. LG seems to be listening, as the LG C4 also gets some audio upgrades. The older C3 had virtual 9.1.2 surround sound and some rather dull-sounding speakers.

Meanwhile, the LG C4 comes with 11.1.2 sound upmixing and enhanced voice re-recording for better dialogue clarity.

There was no sound demo available at the LG booth, but with improved upmixing, we expect the TV’s default speakers to sound better as well.

During the LG presentation, they brought Google on stage and announced that Google Chromecast supports LG’s entire 2024 TV lineup, including the LG C4. You can turn any TV into a smart TV using Google’s own adapter. It’s cheap, has a full user interface, and lets you stream, cast, and more.

This is part of a partnership that will bring more Google features to LG products, including Google Home and Matter support. LG TVs will soon act as Google Home hubs, allowing you to set up and control smart home devices through LG’s ThinQ app.

The C4 won’t have smart home capabilities at launch, but it should be available later in 2024.

Dolby Vision HDR

TVs have supported various types of HDR for years, including HDR10, Dolby Vision, and more. LG will go one step further in 2024 with the launch of Dolby Vision Filmmaker Mode. For the uninitiated, LG introduced the regular Filmmaker Mode a few years ago. This is a picture mode developed by the Ultra HD Alliance to make movies look better by enabling or disabling specific TV features to preserve the director’s original visuals.

Dolby Vision Filmmaker Mode is essentially the same, just for HDR. It disables motion smoothing, keeps artificial sharpening to a minimum, and sets the TV to a warmer color temperature to recreate the look viewers see in movie theaters.

If it’s anything like the regular Filmmaker Mode, it also subtly reduces brightness to avoid blown highlights in brighter scenes.

7 LG C4 will be compatible with LG wireless bar speakers

All wireless home theater setups are getting closer to reality. The LG C4, G4, and M4 are closer to this reality than many other TVs. All three products can connect wirelessly to LG’s S95TR and SG10TY and handle wireless, lossless Dolby Atmos sound. This means you don’t have to waste an eARC HDMI port getting the soundbar up and running.

This will eventually become more common as Dolby works on its Dolby Atmos FlexConnect technology, but you can skip this line if you don’t mind buying an LG C4 and a compatible soundbar.
