long story short

  • Google Nest users can now view event history, download clips, and even create custom clips directly from the web browser.
  • The public preview program gives you a sneak peek at upcoming features like the home automation script editor and garage door detection.

The Google Nest team is rolling out a major update to the web version of Google Home. The update brings many long-awaited features to the service.

Today, Google announced that it will significantly improve the camera experience of Nest cameras and doorbells. This update addresses user requests directly with features such as merged event and timeline history, clip downloads, custom clip creation tools, and picture-in-picture support for live camera views.

The update coincides with the launch of the web version of Google Home to the public, immediately providing users with a more feature-rich experience.

The company says users can now access their camera history directly from a web browser, search for specific events by date and time, and download clips for easy sharing. Google is also launching a new custom clip creation tool that allows users to create personalized video clips from their camera history by selecting a start time and adjusting the duration using a slider.

Public Preview Program

Google Home for the web is also now offering public preview registration, allowing users to try out upcoming features before a wider release. Users can opt in through the Google Home app or web interface. The program offers several interesting features to try out, including a home automation script editor that allows users to view, create, edit, or deactivate script routines for their smart home right from the browser.

Nest Aware subscribers can take advantage of another perk in the public preview program called Garage Door Detection. With a compatible wired Nest Cam, Nest Aware subscribers can receive alerts when their garage door is accidentally opened. The feature is said to leverage AI-driven image detection and device intelligence to eliminate the need for additional hardware or sensors.

Finally, the public preview program is extended to first-generation Nest Cam indoor or outdoor users. These users can move their devices to the Google Home app to experience the new camera history feature in the app and on the Google Home network.

The custom clip update will be rolling out in the coming weeks and will be compatible with a variety of Nest cameras and doorbells. This includes Nest Cam (indoor, wired, 2nd gen), Nest Cam (outdoor or indoor, battery), Nest Cam with Floodlight, Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen), Nest Doorbell (battery), and even a 3rd Generation Nest Cam indoor and outdoor models once moved to home applications.
