Google will host its next I/O developer conference on May 14, 2024. As is customary, Google teased the date with an online puzzle for developers and fans to solve. This year’s I/O puzzle requires intrepid puzzle solvers to lay out a digital track to guide the ball to the finish line. As you progress through the levels, wrinkles will appear, new orbital pieces come with different abilities, and some three-dimensional thinking will be required to navigate around more complex obstacles.
Google is sure to spend some time at I/O 2024 discussing how it plans to curb Gemini to keep up with OpenAI and Microsoft.
The Google Developer Conference announcement comes at an interesting time for the company. Google is still working to improve its Gemini AI model as it competes with OpenAI, and recently dealt with a high-profile example of generated AI images gone wrong, prompting the company to completely disable Gemini’s ability to generate images. Google is sure to spend some time at I/O 2024 discussing how it plans to curb Gemini to keep up with OpenAI and Microsoft.
Android 15: How to install the developer preview
We don’t recommend installing the Android 15 Development Preview, but if you insist… here’s how to install it.
What will Google announce at I/O 2024?
Android 15, Gemini, Pixel 8a, etc.
Google’s conference is geared toward developers, but like Apple’s WWDC keynote, the search giant also uses its conference to address the public. Google is expected to plan to introduce some new features in Android 15 and may launch the next version of its smartwatch operating system, Wear OS 5.
The current Android 15 developer preview has revealed some of the technical changes Google plans to make, but it usually reserves flashier, more consumer-oriented features and design changes for its keynotes. Google’s work with Gemini will also be highlighted, along with possible new integrations with Google’s existing Android and web services.

Given the leaks so far, I/O 2024 is likely to unveil the Pixel 8a, a mid-range revamp of the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. The Pixel 8a is expected to inherit the new round design elements of the Pixel 8, but with fewer cameras, a different internal structure, and an overall more affordable price. Google tends to use these half-step releases to clean up the rough edges of the previous year’s flagships. For example, we’re big fans of the Pixel 7a, which bodes well for the Pixel 8a.
It remains to be seen whether the new phone will join the ranks teased for this fall’s flagship phones and tablets like the Pixel 9, Pixel Tablet 2 and even the Pixel Fold 2. Google loves to leak its products, so it’s possible.
