The highly anticipated Apple car project “Project Titan” has been officially canceled by Apple, disappointing technology enthusiasts around the world. However, leaked design information sheds light on what might be going on. Contrary to expectations for a sleek, futuristic design, Apple is reportedly developing a minivan-style electric vehicle (EV) inspired by iconic vehicles like the Volkswagen Microbus.
The Apple Car was originally conceptualized by famed designer Jony Ive, and its first design iteration resembled a modern interpretation of the classic Volkswagen minivan, earning it the nickname “Breadbread” within Apple. Subsequent designs retained elements of this aesthetic, with later versions closely resembling the 2017 Volkswagen ID Buzz prototype.
In its final stages, the Apple Car was designed to resemble the Canoo Lifestyle Vehicle, with rounded edges and gull-wing doors. Interiors are designed to be simple and spacious, and may incorporate entertainment facilities such as integrated TVs or iPads, as well as advanced air conditioning systems.
Apple executives, including CEO Tim Cook, reportedly favored the final design, but despite internal enthusiasm, the project was ultimately killed. These design reveals provide insight into Apple’s vision for electric vehicles, showcasing a departure from traditional automotive design norms. However, with the cancellation of Project Titan, the public has to think about Apple’s plans to enter the automotive industry.
