Much of West and Central Africa is without internet service as operators of several undersea cables reported outages.
The cause of Thursday’s cable failure was unclear.
African submarine cable operator Seacom has confirmed that services on its West Africa cable system have been shut down and customers relying on the cable will be redirected to the Google Equiano cable used by Seacom.
“Redirects occur automatically when routes are affected,” it said in an email.
Côte d’Ivoire is experiencing severe network outages, while Liberia, Benin, Ghana and Burkina Faso are also severely affected, according to Netblocks, which monitors cybersecurity and internet governance.

“There appears to be a pattern in the timing of disturbances from northern to southern Africa,” Cloudflare Radar said.
South African telecoms operator Vodacom also blamed connectivity problems on a submarine cable failure affecting South African network providers.
