We’ve now reached the Sweet 16 phase of the tournament, and there are some surprises. But overall, most of our remaining contestants are very large and popular apps, so it’s getting harder to predict the winner in each category.
Here’s how we rated Instagram in the first round:
Instagram has 2.4 billion monthly active users. The king of photo-sharing apps, Instagram has gone through one hell of an evolution since its debut in 2010 and subsequent acquisition by Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta. Almighty algorithms are more important than ever, and Reels has become an app within an app. Videos stand out as well as photos Now, Kylie Jenner dumped itand it seems like there are new accusations every week This app is ruining our children. Still, Instagram exists.
Here’s what we think about WhatsApp:
In this corner of the world with around 2 billion users worldwide, we have the ruler of messaging apps. Launched in 2009, WhatsApp was originally designed to protect user privacy with a barebones platform focused exclusively on encryption. But its popularity exploded, and capital’s vultures began circling.
Facebook acquired the platform in 2014 for $19 billion, and co-founder Jan Koum publicly announced the news shortly after. admit He sold his soul to the devil and user privacy to Zuckerberg. Another co-founder, Brian Acton, who later took a senior role at Signal, wanted to keep WhatsApp’s original dream alive, but the app has yet to gain the same footing.
To be fair, WhatsApp is changing at about the same pace as other products Facebook has acquired, and it still doesn’t even include ads (Although they are here). In some ways, WhatsApp fulfills Facebook’s original mission: it’s a place for friends.
So, reader, what would it be? Are you an extrovert who likes to live life with a slightly altered face in public? Or do you prefer to keep your relationship away from prying eyes? Either way, Zuckerberg is the winner.
