Cars have come a long way since Karl Friedrich Benz built the first car powered by an internal combustion engine in 1885. Fast forward to 1994 and we have self-driving cars thanks to Project Prometheus, which started in 1986 and culminated in 1995 when a Mercedes S-Class traveled from Munich, Germany to Copenhagen, Denmark traveled 1,092 miles and back, sometimes without human intervention.
These once-fascinating results were only possible thanks to the computing power available at the time. However, the continuous development of technology and 30 years have pushed automotive technology to new heights, bringing unprecedented possibilities. Which brings us to MediaTek’s latest announcement, with the tech giant bringing advanced AI capabilities to vehicles through its new Dimensity Auto Cockpit chipset powered by NVIDIA technology to make your driving smarter.
MediaTek has announced the launch of four new automotive chips that will become part of the Dimensity automotive cockpit series. These new chips are designed to provide “Powerful AI-enabled in-car experiences for next-generation smart cars.” These four new SoCs include MediaTek Dimensity Auto Cockpit CX-1, CY-1, CM-1 and CV-1, all supporting NVIDIA DRIVE OS, deep learning capabilities, the most advanced ARM v9-system and NVIDIA next-generation GPUs, Accelerated AI computing and NVIDIA RTX graphics cards will be powerful enough to power your rides “Chatbots, delivery of rich content to multiple displays, driver alertness detection, and other cutting-edge AI-based safety and entertainment applications.”
You also get the advantage of running the application locally, which is perfect for security and increased speed since you don’t have to wait for your car to connect to the server to start working; in other words, bye-bye extended wait times for work .
Jerry Yu, senior vice president and general manager of CCM business at MediaTek, explained:
“Generative AI is transforming the automotive industry just as it is revolutionizing the mobile market with more personal and intuitive computing experiences.
Dimensity’s automotive cockpit product portfolio will set off a new wave of automotive AI entertainment, and our unified hardware and software platform allows automakers to easily expand AI capabilities across their entire product lines. “
NVIDIA RTX GPU brings better visual effects
Having an NVIDIA RTX GPU also helps you experience better visuals, as you get support for “ray tracing for realistic visuals and lighting effects in games, as well as AI upscaling and frame generation for fast, smooth motion.” Users will also love the new experience that allows them to seamlessly stream video and other content across multiple displays, and you can even conduct conference calls on the go thanks to advanced video conferencing features including AI gaze correction and AI-based audio enhancement will help deliver a stunning experience. Try not to drive while answering important calls.
My favorite feature of MediaTek chips is that they have built-in multi-camera HDR ISP support for front-facing cameras, in-car cameras, and bird’s-eye view cameras for a variety of security applications. The integrated audio DSP is also great because it supports the most popular digital assistants, so you can get information on the go, or control your entertainment without taking your hands off the steering wheel.
