Internet Outage: Starlink Is Applying for License

The Minister of Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has announced that the government’s plans to roll out plans to license more satellite internet service providers in response to disruptions in internet services in the country have achieved made progress.

She said in a report on 3news.com that global satellite internet service provider Starlink is going through the licensing process required to operate in Ghana.

Owusu-Ekuful, while briefing Parliament on the internet outage (March 18, 2024) stressed that it would take at least five weeks to repair the damaged submarine cables that caused the outage.

She stressed the importance of licensing Starlink and encouraging other operators to establish operations in Ghana

“Starlink is getting licenses. And encouraging other operators to come to Ghana. We must also invest in operating RASCOM (Regional African Satellite Company) rather than each country going it alone.

“All network operators must arrange and implement alternative routes to restore telephone services that are currently being done,” she said.

SpaceX, a leading spacecraft manufacturer and satellite communications company led by tech billionaire and visionary entrepreneur Elon Musk, had earlier planned to launch its innovative satellite internet service Starlink in 2024 Expanding to Ghana and Egypt.

The move aims to provide affordable high-speed internet access to underserved communities around the world.
