Surf Internet is working to bring its fiber optic internet service to Spring Valley.
The company hopes to provide high-speed internet to 2,800 homes, including the option of 2 megabit internet speeds, spokesperson Jennifer Alvarez told the Spring Valley City Council on Monday. The company will also provide telephone services.
Alvarez said Surf works with the communities where the internet is installed to make sure officials agree on when construction will take place and that the construction won’t cause any problems.
Emails are sent to customers carrying out installations, and signage with QR codes is sent on construction sites to explain the work. Fiber optic lines are installed approximately 18 to 24 inches deep. After construction is completed, staff will knock on residents’ doors.
If Spring Valley reaches an agreement with Surf, Alvarez said Surf has reached an agreement with Oglesby and Ottawa to assign a representative to Spring Valley.
If a deal is reached, Surf hopes to install it next year, Alvarez said. Installation time depends on specific agreements with the community, she said. Residents need to request the service to be connected to their homes.
No decision was made Monday.
