AMD releases FSR 3.1: greatly improving upgrade quality

Last September, AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 technology package made a number of enhancements to FSR technology on Radeon RX 6000 and 7000 series graphics cards. But there’s no limit to perfection, so this week, the company launched FSR 3.1 technology, which improves upgrade quality, decouples frame generation from AMD upgrades, and makes it easier for developers to use FSR.

Arguably, the main enhancement of AMD FSR 3.1 is its improved temporal upscaling image quality: compared to FSR 2.2, images flicker less when still and no longer ghost when in motion. Another major development brought by FSR 3.1 is its decoupling from the frame generation functionality introduced in FSR 3. This feature relies on AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF), a form of optical flow interpolation. It uses temporal game data such as motion vectors to add extra frames between existing frames. This feature can increase the performance of compatible games by up to two times, but it was originally tied to the FSR 3 upgrade, which was a limitation. Starting with FSR 3.1, it will work with other upgrade methods, although AMD is not currently revealing which methods and on which hardware. Additionally, the company did not reveal when game developers expect implementation.

In addition, AMD has provided support for FSR3 for Vulkan and Xbox game development kits, enabling game developers on these platforms to use it. It also adds FSR 3.1 to the FidelityFX API, simplifying debugging and enabling forward compatibility with newer versions of FSR.

When AMD FSR 3 is released in September 2023, it will initially be supported by two games: Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum, with 10 more games ready to join. Fast forward to six months later, and the lineup has expanded to an impressive 40 games that currently support or will soon be included in FSR 3. As of March 2024, games such as “Avatar: Pandora’s Frontier”, “Starfield”, and “The Last of Us Part 1” all support FSR. Soon, Cyberpunk 2077, Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Frostpunk 2, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift will support FSR soon.
