what you need to know
- The latest beta version of WhatsApp on Android brings a convenient new voice note transcription feature.
- The update is likely to roll out for Android soon as it is already available for iOS.
- Users who want to use this feature must install an additional 150MB of application data to enable the feature.
WhatsApp is working on another great feature for Android devices that will finally bring the ability to transcribe voice messages. The feature was previously rolled out in WhatsApp for iOS and may soon be included on Android phones.
Tipster AssembleDebug spotted the feature in the latest beta version (WhatsApp version) of the Meta-owned messaging platform (via TheSpAndroid) 2.24.7.7). An APK teardown revealed some strings about the feature, indicating that Android devices require text logging to be enabled on WhatsApp.
Enabled transcripts should become accessible based on the string. However, users who want to test new features must download 150MB of new app data. When allowed, users will be able to read the transcript before listening to incoming voice messages.
“WhatsApp uses your device’s speech recognition capabilities to deliver end-to-end encrypted text. Learn more,” the string further explains.
WABetaInfo further shared some insights about the new feature and posted screenshots of the feature via WhatsApp beta 2.24.7.8 version, available through the Google Play Beta program. The feature is considered “designed to enhance accessibility and convenience for users who prefer to read text rather than listen to voice notes,” WBI noted.
The strings in the above APK teardown can be clearly seen in the screenshot shared by WBI. This could be the final UI that WhatsApp users can expect before enabling the feature after the update officially rolls out.
The upcoming feature leverages on-device speech recognition rather than just relying on voice annotated audio, which is a win-win since the transcription never leaves the device and is end-to-end encrypted at the same time.
As the feature is expected to roll out soon, users will be able to see voice transcriptions below the voice note bubble in the conversation pane of any personal chat or group. As of now, this feature is under development and is still in the beta phase and is expected to be officially launched soon.
