Google released the first developer preview of Android 15 last month, and today the second version has been released. This is still not a public beta, the first beta will be released in April. Instead, like the first preview, it’s designed to allow developers to check out their apps.
Android 15 release schedule
One of the big new features introduced with Android 15 DP2 is support for satellite connectivity at the OS level. Google said the operating system now includes a number of user interface elements designed to “ensure a consistent user experience across satellite connectivity.”
Applications can detect when a device is connected to a satellite, thereby understanding why full network service may not be available. It also supports SMS/MMS applications as well as preloaded RCS applications to send and receive messages using satellite connectivity.
There are also improvements to PDF viewing, allowing developers to enable their applications to render password-protected PDFs and annotations, as well as letting you search, edit, and select content within PDFs. Local PDF viewing should also be faster and use fewer resources. The PDF renderer itself will be updated via Google Play system updates, independent of Android version updates.
Additionally, the experience of paying with NFC should be “more seamless and reliable,” and automatic language switching for audio recognition has also been improved. Developers can also now use the Android 15 feature to make their apps appear on the small overlay screen of clamshell and foldable devices.
Apps in Android 15 will detect that they are being recorded, and support for loudness standards has been added to help avoid loudness inconsistencies when switching between different audio content. Finally, Do Not Disturb mode becomes more customizable, letting you give special treatment to certain rules and allowing rules to trigger actions like turning the display to black and white, turning on night mode, and dimming wallpapers.
