Will the Internet ruin your marriage?

In recent weeks, it’s been hard to avoid wild speculation from social media sleuths about the status of high-profile marriages. Many of them have concocted various stories about infidelity and relationship breakdown, often providing outlandish so-called “evidence” to support their ridiculous claims, racking up millions of views on TikTok and Twitter/X. It went viral quickly.

Armchair detectives base their theories on small details in photos, clothing choices or a pieced-together timeline. The crazier the theory, the more their videos seem to attract viewers. But it’s not just those in the public eye who are under the eagle eye of their conspiracy. The army of internet investigators has a new target…ordinary people.

This month alone, two cases of alleged “cheating” have gone viral on TikTok, with detectives naming them and, in one case, photos of them being secretly filmed.
