March Madness Memes: Caitlin Clark, her dad, upset and more give us great internet moments

For some sports fans, it’s the most wonderful time of the year: March Madness. The NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments are in full swing and already creating memorable moments.

Over the past few days, many people have been glued to their TVs watching game after game. March Madness has produced some great memes over the past few years. Remember the sad flute girl and the crying northwest kid? This year is no exception.

Here are some of the memes and jokes from March Madness so far, which has been marked by unease, huge drama, and huge emotions.

Caitlin Clark and her father

Caitlin Clark, a popular superstar leading No. 1 seed Iowa in the women’s tournament, is a famously enthusiastic player. Her Hawkeyes easily defeated 16th-seeded Holy Cross 91-65 in their first game. Even so, Clark still got into an argument with the referee. To be fair, she did get elbowed in the face during the match.

But Clark’s father was frustrated by her antics in the stands. He seemed to angrily tell his daughter not to complain, which many people found hilarious. This seems to be the interaction a lot of people have with their dads in youth sports.

Oakland frustrations and Jake Goerke

The biggest upset of March Madness so far was No. 14 seed Oakland’s upset loss to No. 3 seed Kentucky. Led by sharpshooter Jack Gohlke, Oakland prevailed against a Kentucky team loaded with future NBA stars. People online like to joke about Goerke, who may not look like a typical basketball star, but he certainly plays like him.

kentucky sad

Speaking of Goerke, a lot of people made jokes about Kentucky after they were expelled by lowly Oakland. When you have the kind of success that Kentucky has historically had, it makes sense that opposing fans would be happy for your demise.

Yale beats Auburn

Third-seeded Auburn was upset by Yale, a fourteenth-seeded team better known for academics than basketball. Of course, there are some jokes about this.

Despite all the crazy stories so far, we’re still in the early stages of March Madness, with the second round of games underway. There are sure to be more memes and jokes to come.
