I spent hours playing this new version alone in the dark before publishing. It’s a strange and creepy enough game to probably satisfy many survival horror fans who have the patience for lag and some “meh.”Although I’m not sure how effective it is resident Evil and timethe last of us– Inspired by the mostly lifeless combat, the sound design (from the sound effects to the soundtrack) is a veritable horrifying call of the Siren that brings me back to this modern take on an old-school classic.

A slow-moving smoky jazz tune, led by gentle drum beats, upright bass and ethereal vocal lines, moves across the stereo field before piano and horns intervene, pulling you further into the darkness. It’s a perfect soundscape that doesn’t immediately fill you with a sense of shocking horror. It plunges you into an aural liminal space, somewhere between safety and the fearful knowledge that awaits.
This spooky yet wonderful sonic fun is present throughout the game, and not just along with the music that takes the gentle rhythms to a frenzy. The ambient sound effects that play a part in the De Certeau mansion and the nightmare realms you’re constantly teleported to also inspire enough levels of fear. As you explore the halls of this mystery-filled mansion, you’ll often hear the scattered sounds of escaping cockroaches, spontaneous but suspicious tapping sounds, and creaking sounds in the walls. It teases you and makes you expect something bad to happen, although the sounds are rarely predictable panic signals. Sure, there are jump scares here, but the seemingly random nature of the ambient sounds makes it a very enjoyable experience to keep you in your chair.
Music also returns in these moments of exploration, with deep honky-tonk piano and roaring horns, and a looming drone that sometimes feels like a physical part of the mansion’s horror.It’s a wonderful auditory hallucination phenomenon that reminds me of some of my favorite experimental ambient artists, such as Robert Rich (But scarier).
