This image, taken by the Webb Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), shows the region near the protostar IRAS 23385. It is a single exposure at 15 micron wavelength, shown in orange.this studyUnder the James Webb Observation of Young Protostars+ (JOYS+) program, Webb’s unique ability to discover early protostars, such as IRAS 23385, contains the building blocks for creating habitable planets. MIRI’s remarkable ability to identify organic molecules in interstellar ice, including acetaldehyde, ethanol, methyl formate, and possibly acetic acid, provides insight into the chemical complexity of the environments of these newborn stars.
