According to the FCC, it is expected that by 2030, there will be 25 billion connected devices in the United States. Now, the FCC wants to make sure these devices are safe so you can have peace of mind when buying a Wi-Fi connected security camera or baby monitor.
“When I think about this new world of IoT, the devices that come to mind most are baby monitors, maybe because I’m a mom,” committee chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said in a report. When you bring a monitor into your home to observe your newborn, you want to know that the connection is secure.”
To help improve the security of these devices, the FCC is developing a program of security requirements for products that meet these standards to display the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark. This mark will indicate that these products have safety measures in place to ensure their safety.
The program will be voluntary, but companies will need to take certain steps to use the mark to show they meet FCC standards for safety.
Recent reports indicate that many internet-connected devices have weak security, allowing outsiders to quickly access them. For any company looking to obtain device certification, this new standard should help prevent this from happening in the future.
