9 offline games for iPad and iPhone that don’t require Wi-Fi

Main points

  • If you’re going on a trip and want to queue up some offline entertainment, you can’t go wrong with iPad and iPhone games.
  • However, not all games can be played offline. So I’ve handpicked some recommendations that you can play without Wi-Fi or the Internet.
  • Of course, you need an internet connection to download them.

The biggest advantage of mobile gaming is its portability. Games downloaded to iPhone and iPad are designed to be played anytime, anywhere. However, you may find that your favorite games won’t run unless you’re connected to the Internet. Considering you’re likely to rely on these games the most when Wi-Fi isn’t available, discovering these games at the worst possible time can be a huge letdown.

Some games simply can’t be played offline, especially online games, but there are plenty of games that offer an amazing experience without a connection. Mobile games come in just as many shapes and sizes as console games and even share a lot of them with them. That’s why I made sure to include a variety of genres and styles so you can find at least one that suits your tastes. These are the best iPhone and iPad games that you can play without an internet connection.

You are beyond the reach of the internet. Accessing the app store and downloading them still requires an internet connection before you can play them offline.

Puzzle games are everywhere in the app store, so they need something special to stand out. Monument Valley and its sequel did this first with its simple but enjoyable art style, but really hooked you in with its mind-bending mazes. All areas are made up of impossible spaces and optical illusions, making finding your way around them tricky but satisfying to solve.

The premise of the game is that you, Ro, are placed in a seemingly impossible stage. Create new paths by manipulating the perspective and you need to navigate them to the end point. Between the pleasant colors and relaxing tunes, it’s a great way to relax without internet coverage.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

What were once cutting-edge games on the original Xbox and PC are now in the palm of your hand. Set thousands of years before the events of the films, you don’t need to know all the ins and outs of the Star Wars universe to enjoy this stunning role-playing game from the masters of Bioware.

You create your own new character in the Star Wars universe, and you guide him through the classic story of good and evil. However, this RPG lets you decide which side to fight for: the Jedi or the Sith. Will you be a glorious warrior of the light side, or a selfish and powerful user of the dark side? this is your choice.

3 Plague Inc.

Plague Inc. was made long before a real plague swept the world, and has become an incredibly fun game in the years since. It’s all about creating and adapting a disease of your own design to try and infect the entire planet before scientists can control and cure it. It’s not a realistic simulation of how the disease occurs, but it does highlight some interesting things about how quickly it spreads.

You have several different disease types to choose from and modify them over time, but actually winning is quite challenging. If you’re interested in playing a game that might hit a little too close to home, Plague Inc. can give you a new perspective on how global health issues are evolving.

Offline Poker – Texas Hold’em

There are many games you can play with a simple deck of cards, but remember that bringing a full deck with plenty of space and room to play with others isn’t always an option. When you’re a poker fan, you also have to consider whether people understand the rules and are of comparable skill level. Alternatively, you can play offline Texas Hold’em.

This is a no-frills poker app that does exactly what it says on the packaging. It sits you down at a table, gives you a bunch of chips, and starts dealing the cards. If you think you’re ready to turn pro, you can even compete in tournaments using artificial intelligence.

Why settle for an amazing puzzle game when you can play both at the same time? I admit this combination doesn’t sound as obvious as chocolate and peanut butter, but trust me when I say it works. Best of all, it’s just as addictive and replayable as the two games it’s inspired by.

The idea is that you have a Tetris-like grid with blocks that need to be removed, except instead of lining up the numbers in those blocks, you need to line them up to remove them. It sounds more complicated than it is when you play it, but you’ll be hooked on your first game.

Fans of classic point-and-click adventure games will love Old Man’s Journey. You’ll need to help the titular old man navigate the various landscapes by manipulating the environment with simple touch controls, somewhat similar to how Monument Valley works.

Much of the game involves moving hills and animals to get the player from one side of the screen to the other, but it also slows down when you’re looking for something in the background to trigger a memory. This will fill in some of the old man’s life and help you understand who he is and what his journey is about, all without a single line of text or spoken dialogue.

I couldn’t resist adding another puzzle game to the list. There’s so much good stuff out there, I don’t think you can blame me, and Flow Free is very different from the others. As with the best dots, the idea is simple: you just need to connect all the dots of the same color together with an unbroken path. Of course, the tricky part is working on each color at the same time.

You get a feel for the puzzles through the early levels and then into the more difficult stages, which are larger and have more colors to connect into incredibly difficult modes. These may bother you for a while, but when you finally crack the code, it will give you a huge sense of accomplishment.

brothers in arms 3

You can’t fix Call of Duty issues offline, but you can still experience the adrenaline rush of Brothers in Arms 3. It’s the third entry in the long-running shooter series, but you don’t need to have played any of the previous games. You will be transported into World War II and take part in some of the most iconic battles of the war.

This is a third-person shooting game, which is different from first-person shooting games, but it has rich scenes and intense gunplay like other games. The campaign is quite long, with plenty of changes between each stage to keep the game fresh. You’ll grow attached to the various “brothers” you meet and fight alongside in this epic adventure.

Who hasn’t heard of the GTA series now? If you’re new to the series, you might miss San Andreas, which is a shame because it’s still one of the best games in the series. While it may not be as powerful and detailed as the latest games, it still has some unique features and a story worth checking out.

Set in the titular city of San Andreas, you’ll follow CJ as he battles various street gangs, the police, and pretty much everything else in his life that tries to draw him into the world of crime. You’re free to follow the storyline or create your own fun in the open world, which is your personal playground of mayhem and destruction.

This game requires you to have an iPhone 4s or higher to run.
