DeepCool is one of the few legacy companies still active in PC power and cooling components. Founded in 1996, the Chinese company initially only produced coolers and cooling accessories, but soon diversified into the PC case and power supply unit (PSU) markets. To this day, DeepCool focuses almost entirely on PC power and cooling products, with input devices and mouse pads being its latest attempts at diversification.

Today’s review turns the focus to DeepCool’s PSUs, more specifically the PX850G 850W ATX 3.0 PSU, which is currently their most popular power supply. The PX850G is designed to balance overall performance, reliability and cost while complying with the ATX 3.0 standard. It’s based on a very popular high-output platform, but strangely, DeepCool believes the PX850G can run up to 40°C.

The DeepCool PX850G 850W PSU comes in neat packaging, with a simple cardboard box embellished with a decorative ribbon to add a touch of style. The unit is well protected during shipping, enclosed in a nylon bag and surrounded by foam padding. Key specifications and an overview of PSU performance are clearly printed on the back, allowing browsing buyers to quickly understand what to expect from the product.

DeepCool provides the typical required mounting screws and AC power cord, but also provides a quick-start adapter and four reusable cable ties for a little extra value. There is also a small envelope with documents inside.

The power supply unit features a fully modular design that allows removal of all DC power cords, including the 24-pin ATX connector. The cable is black from the connector to the wires. All products are sleeveless, creating a unified visual design.

The DeepCool PX850G 850W PSU is housed in a case that measures 86 mm × 150 mm × 160 mm (H × W × D), which is just a little longer than typical ATX standard dimensions. This size allows the power supply unit to be integrated smoothly into most tower PC cases, with the only exception being compact and some HTPC/Cubic PC case designs. Despite its large size, length is a necessary sacrifice to accommodate the 135mm cooling fan.

DeepCool focuses on the appearance design of the PX850G 850W PSU, reflecting the balance between beauty and functionality. The power unit has a satin black finish and the company’s logo is engraved on the sides of the chassis. The integrated fan finger guard has a unique square design, unlike the typical round guard. There is an information label on the top of the device detailing the PSU’s specifications and certifications.

Typically, the power switch and AC input socket are located on the back, along with a button that can be used to turn off hybrid fan mode and force the device’s fans to stay on at all times. The front is dedicated to modular connectors, each with a simple white label for quick identification. A standout feature is the inclusion of a turquoise 12VHPWR connector, emphasizing that the device conforms to the latest ATX 3.0 standard with a bit of visual flair.

This particular fan operates at a maximum speed of 2300 RPM, which is an impressive number for a 135mm fan responsible for cooling an 850W device.

The DeepCool PX850G 850W PSU is manufactured by Channel-Well Technologies (CWT), a prominent OEM known for its expertise in developing mid-to-high power output PC power supplies. CWT’s legacy as a respected OEM is well established, with its platforms used in some of the most popular products of all time.

The DeepCool PX850G 850W PSU architecture is based on a tried and true topology so there are no surprises. At the power input, the filtering stage is slightly enhanced from the minimum baseline recommended by the ATX design guide, with four Y capacitors, two X capacitors, and two filter inductors. Next are the two rectifier bridges, both connected to their dedicated heat sinks. Active power factor correction (APFC) circuitry takes up a lot of space, with the main heat sink holding the active components along the perimeter of the PCB. The APFC transistors are two Infineon 6R125P6 MOSFETs and a diode. The APFC also includes a packaged filter inductor and two large capacitors (a Nippon Chemi-Con 330 μF and a Rubycon 470 μF).

In the main inverter stage of the DeepCool PX850G 850W PSU, a half-bridge LLC topology is used, with two power transistors mounted on a large dedicated heat sink. This configuration is popular in modern power supplies due to its low cost and reliability. The secondary conversion stage consists of six Onsemi 5C430N transistors on a vertical daughter board, producing a single 12V output. The 3.3V and 5V outputs are managed by DC-DC conversion circuitry on another daughter board.

On the secondary side, the DeepCool PX850G 850W PSU uses capacitors from Rubycon and Nippon Chemi-Con, as well as multiple Nichicon polymer capacitors.
