long story short
- Google is developing a “Tab Declutter” feature for Chrome on Android.
- Tabs that have not been used for a long time will be archived.
- You will be able to restore or delete archive tabs from the archive tab list.
Is Chrome on your Android phone overwhelmed by your open tabs? Google may release a feature to help sort out the clutter.
as found 9 to 5 googleA string of code in Chromium, the free and open source web browser project maintained by Google, references the “Tab Declutter” feature built specifically for Android. The feature seems to be locked behind some flags.
If the user enables this feature, it will allow the browser to automatically archive tabs that have been deemed inactive. This feature can help speed up Chrome when your main tab list is cleaned up. It then moves these inactive tabs from the main tab list to the archived tab list. In the list of archived tabs, the user can choose the fate of these inactive tabs: deletion or restoration.
It’s unclear how long a tab must remain unused before Chrome classifies it as inactive. This might be a good solution if you don’t want to close any tabs but would like your main tab list to be more organized.
The outlet added that the feature is not expected to roll out until Chrome 125 is released at the earliest. Keep in mind that this code simply means that Google is developing the feature. There is no guarantee that this feature will be rolled out.
Other features recently discovered in Chrome for Android are the ability to use other password managers and autofill providers. When this feature is enabled, it gives users two options, “Default” (Google Password Manager and Chrome Autofill) or “Use another provider.”
