A woman asked online if she could wear a cream dress to a wedding but quickly got an angry answer.
Tanya received a cream dress in the mail that featured spaghetti straps, bust cups and a knee-high slit.
This pleated dress is from Manning Cartell and is priced at $699, or $456.
She said she was “obsessed” with the dress but asked her social media followers if the color would be appropriate to wear to a wedding.
“Like tan/cream/nude. I hope that because I’m black it doesn’t look white,” she said.
“Obviously I don’t want to offend anyone, but it’s just the best formal wear I’ve ever seen that I love.”
Tanya claims she has only attended Indian weddings before and says she will host three weddings in 2024.
Social media users were unanimous – Tanya should not have worn this dress to the wedding.
“Hardly no. The dress is beautiful,” one social media user declared.
Another added: “My policy is if you have to question, then no.”
“Not for a wedding. But absolutely fantastic for another event,” one social media user shared.
One added: “I think it all depends on the bride. I asked because I wanted to wear black and she said she would rather I wear white/cream than black.”
“Hardly, no, this dress remains an option for my own rehearsal dinner as a bride,” one person added.
Another declared: “This is absolutely gorgeous but I’m getting married this spring and if anyone wore this to my wedding I would cry.”
In a follow-up video, Tanya said she didn’t buy the dress to wear to a wedding, but for a family trip as they were attending more formal events.
It wasn’t until the dress came along that she began to think it might be worn at the wedding.
Tanya also held up the dress over a white dress, and while the dress did look different, she understood it might look different on camera.
“In Indian weddings, there is no concept of upstaging the bride, you are basically encouraged to dress nicely,” she said.
“I know white isn’t allowed in Western weddings because it’s too tanning, I’m not sure.”
She said everyone agreed not to wear the dress.
