Most of the time, streaming on Spotify is a seamless experience. But when the Wi-Fi or cellular signal goes out, so does your music. To make sure you’re never short of music on a plane, train, or anywhere else, you can download songs from Spotify for offline listening.
How do you know when a song, album or playlist is available offline? Look for a small green circle with a black arrow inside. If the icon is next to a song, album, or playlist, the content is available for offline listening.
Don’t see the circle? We’ve put together a short how-to to help you download what you want, but to use it you must:
-
Become a Spotify Premium subscriber.
-
Plan ahead. When you lose your cell phone service, you won’t be able to download content.
Now, let’s get to the good stuff.
-
Spotify app (mobile or desktop)
-
Internet connection
Step 1: Log in to your Premium Spotify account and find the album or song you want to listen to offline.
Downloading songs for offline use is only available with Premium Spotify accounts, so you’ll need to purchase a subscription if you don’t have an account yet. Learn more about premium pricing here.
Step 2: To download the full album, click on it and then tap on the icon that looks like a gray circle with an arrow inside.
Once clicked, the arrow within the gray icon will change to a white square, indicating that the album is being downloaded. Once the download is complete, the green version of the arrow icon will replace the gray version.

Step 3: To download a song, click on the three dots next to a track and select “Add to Playlist” from the menu. Create a new playlist and add songs to it.
Spotify doesn’t yet allow users to download individual tracks. Instead, tracks must be added to a playlist, and then the playlist must be downloaded.

Step 4: Repeat step 3 to add all the songs you want to download to this new playlist.
Step 5: Click the Library tab in the lower right corner of the app. Navigate to your new playlist. To download it, click on the gray circle icon with an arrow.
Once clicked, the arrow within the gray icon will change to a white square, indicating that the playlist is being downloaded. Once the download is complete, the green version of the arrow icon will replace the gray version.
