Your goal is to try and create the largest fruit type, watermelon (‘splash‘ is the Japanese word for ‘watermelon’, so that’s your title). Doing this will earn you as many points as possible as the two merged watermelons will disappear. Watermelons are also the largest type of fruit, which means they take up most of the space in the jar.
Space in the jar will be one of your biggest concerns when playing the game. If any fruit pops out of the top of the jar, it’s game. As you match, there will naturally be more large fruit in the jar, and if you’re not careful, it’s easy to leave small fruit behind, preventing the large fruits from touching each other. You’ll almost certainly run out of space sooner or later, especially if you end up with several watermelons that you can’t touch each other. Your goal is to get as high a score as possible before something appears.

You can play the game in portrait or landscape mode, so you can enjoy it however you want. Beyond that, there’s not much more to it. The game has always had a slightly spartan side to it, and the mobile version doesn’t change that. There are no meta-goals to pursue, no stages to clear, no unlockables to find. Just keep shooting to get higher scores. You know, like the good old days.

Its out-of-the-box nature makes it perfect for mobile devices, and I’m glad I now don’t have to whip out my Switch whenever I want to play it. While we had a browser-based version to play before, it lacked a lot of the charm of the original, and while there were plenty of knockoffs, none of them played very well. It’s nice to have the real thing on iOS that looks, sounds and plays exactly the same, with no ads or IAPs to ruin the enjoyment. Is it worth the price? You bet it is.
